  • Overall take away:  Reasons to be Pretty examines our perception of beauty.  The play asks whether it is a curse to be conventionally pretty or to be considered ugly.  The play questions the judgement that we make about people and appearance, and if beauty itself is all that important.  Reasons to be Pretty is an examination on human relationships.  The misunderstandings that occur in this play are just as important as love and trust in a relationship.

  • Carly is Kent’s girlfriend.  She is very attractive and gets a lot of attention from men, which can make her uncomfortable.  She believes that good looks can sometimes be difficult for women. She works as a security guard at the same place that Kent and Greg work.  She is not very intelligent and can often create conflict.  She tells Steph about the comment that Greg made.  After that, Greg and Carly do not get along that well.

  • Kent:  Kent is Greg’s best friend. He is chauvinistic and kind of a douche bag.  He only values women based on appearances.  Kent lives with Carly, and having a beautiful girlfriend worries him sometimes about being able to keep her.  He does not think that Carly is very smart, but it’s her looks that he cares about.  Kent is not very smart himself and pokes fun at Greg for reading and trying to better himself.  In fact, he thinks Greg thinks he is better than him because of it.  

    Kent:  Kent is Greg’s best friend.   • Greg: Greg works the night shift packaging food.  He is friends with his colleague Kent who is very different from Greg, but they talk and spend their breaks together.  Carly overhears the guys talking about a new co-worker.  Greg says that Steph (his girlfriend) is no major beauty but that is not important to his love for her.  This causes Steph to break up with Greg.  Greg is very passive and doesn’t always know the right thing to say to Steph.  He is intelligent and loves reading to better himself, but this does not help him with real qualifications for a better job.

  • Greg and Steph should dress simply, especially compared to Kent and Carly.  The idea is that Kent and Carly have the more colorful exterior, but I do think that deep down they are both bland people.  Quite oppositely, Greg and Steph dress simple, but have colorful personality’s
